THE ARTIST · BELINDA WEARNE
Art for me is an interpretation of the things I cannot see with my eyes.
I imagine that most people believe it to be the opposite - visual art is about the visible, right?
The part I find fascinating about my work however is that it shows me the pieces of what I DO NOT SEE with my physical eyes.
It’s the unseen, the unremembered, the unknown. Rather than a direct copy of what IS obviously there, it’s the suggestion of something else existing that delights me and reminds me of the vastness of who we are as humans.
It is the emergence of what we tend to overlook when we are unable to be deeply present. The thing is still and was always there. It simply hasn’t been witnessed into existence yet.
I live and work in the Tweed, in The Northern Rivers of New South Wales.
When I create the sculptures, it’s the clay that lets me know who is desiring to emerge - I create until I recognise her, arrived in a personified form. Something (someone?) that has wanted to exist, has been able to arrive by my hand. I love that I get to be in the gift of that. The tangibility of a vortex of feeling and sensing, landing as a sigil to be felt through time. They have become not just artworks, but my allies, my protectors and my reminders of the power and movements of ancestry and lineage.
The paintings are a moment removed, a reflection upon the sculptures that has lent to more symbolised imagery. Again, with just a starting point of reference, a whole new being is able to emerge. An interpretation of an interpretation, coming closer to language. Moving from 3D, organic material, into a variant with its own life and its own story. No less vibrant or resonant, just different…a descendant continuation of the story.
For me, the creation comes first. The interpretation comes later and is infinitely more difficult.
Who am I to tell you who these women are?
In the end, it is your interpretation, your felt sense, your understanding from your very unique and personal perception and perspective, that means something vastly more fascinating.
And vastly more meaningful for me.
To have reached into the stillness, the ether, brought back a form, not just for myself, but for anyone who has the desire and capacity to observe.

Paintings and clay sculptures of women, lineage, and the old ways of feminine knowing and being.
